Professional Experience

Ryan is an experienced advisor to financial institutions and service providers, guiding them through complex federal, Maine, and Massachusetts regulatory compliance matters. As a partner in our Maine office with over 35 years of experience, he counsels clients on:

  • Consumer and commercial deposit products, including electronic banking and other related services
  • Payments products and systems, including automated clearing house transfers, credit and debit cards, and prepaid access
  • Consumer finance products, including mortgages, open-end credit programs, student loans, and auto financing
  • Marketing, advertising, and privacy compliance
  • Vendor contracting and third-party risk management

Ryan represents community, regional, and national banks, as well as non-bank providers of financial products and services, helping them navigate evolving compliance challenges.

Before joining Hudson Cook, Ryan was a partner and co-leader of the Banking & Financial Services practice group at Pierce Atwood LLP. He also served as Senior Counsel to BankBoston, N.A.

A leader in consumer finance law, Ryan is a Fellow of the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers and an active member of the American Bar Association's Consumer Financial Services Committee, where he previously chaired the Deposit Products and Payment Systems Subcommittee. He is also a past chair of the Maine State Bar Association's Consumer and Financial Institutions Law Section and a member of the Conference on Consumer Finance Law.

Since 2011, Ryan has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America® for Banking and Finance Law and Financial Services Regulation Law. He was named "Lawyer of the Year" in Banking and Finance Law for Portland, Maine, in 2025, 2023, 2021, 2018, and 2015.

Ryan brings decades of experience helping financial institutions stay compliant while innovating in an ever-changing regulatory landscape.

When not practicing law, Ryan can be found spending time with, cooking for and traveling with his family, and cheering for (or grumbling about) his favorite New England area sports teams.
