Partner Tom Buiteweg appointed to Uniform Law Commission and American Law Institute joint study committee

The American Law Institute (ALI) and the Uniform Law Commission (ULC) have formed a joint study committee to examine whether there is a need to amend the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) in light of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, distributed-ledger technology and virtual currency. Partner Tom Buiteweg, an active member of both organizations, has been appointed to this joint study committee by the ULC.

The study committee will be examining every Article of the UCC, other than Article 6 (bulk transfers). The committee is interested in receiving input from business and consumer groups, governmental agencies, academics, and as many other interested persons as possible. Tom helps financial institutions, sales finance companies, motor vehicle dealers and manufacturers to establish and maintain motor vehicle and personal property financing and leasing programs. He assists fintechs and other companies to establish and maintain electronic financial services programs, including the regulation of virtual currency businesses, highly automated vehicles and smart contracts. Tom isan Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan Law School where he teaches a course in sales and secured financing that focuses on dealer and consumer motor vehicle sales and financing.He also serves as Chair of the Michigan Commission on Uniform State Laws, as the Treasurer and an Executive Committee Member of the ULC, and chairs its Automated Operation of Vehicles Drafting Committee and Committee on Technology.
